[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] Gyeongju Trip, which was already attracting attention from prominent international festivals before its release, won the Audience Award at the 24th Florence Korean Film Festival.

Gyeongju Trip is a family revenge drama about four mothers who, after eight years of waiting, set out on a journey that turns deadly to find justice for their youngest daughter, Gyeongju, who never returned from a school trip.

The 24th Florence Korean Film Festival opened on March 19 and closed on March 28. Held in Florence—one of Europe’s cultural centers—the festival has been a cultural bridge between Korea and Italy for more than two decades. It is regarded as Europe’s largest Korean film festival and has played a major role in introducing Korean culture across the region. That Gyeongju Trip won the Audience Award underscores that the film has resonated not only with critics but also with general audiences.

The film drew enthusiastic reviews from local critics. Film critic Katerina Liberani described it as a piece where comic and surreal moments unfold alongside intimate personal suffering. Jang Eun-young, vice chair of the Florence Korean Film Festival, said audiences praised the film’s family-centered narrative and found the ensemble performances deeply moving. She also noted that Italian viewers were particularly charmed by the portrayal of a lesser-known city.

Set against the distinctly Korean backdrop of Gyeongju, the film impressed critics with the cast’s powerful chemistry and director Kim Mi-jo’s assured yet nuanced direction. Having earned recognition abroad for both its artistic merit and popular appeal, Gyeongju Trip is cementing its status as one of 2026’s most anticipated releases.

The Audience Award–winning Gyeongju Trip will be released in theaters in 2026.
